The Calf of Man is small but has centuries of history to tell. By most standards the Isle of Man is regarded as pretty small. This islet off the southern-most tip of the island is just one-and-a-half miles long by around a mile wide and at its highest point rises some feet above sea level. Many ships have foundered here over the years, most famously the brig “Lily” in The vessel had lost some of her sails in terrific winds and ran aground near Kitterland – a patch of rock between the island and the Calf.
She was loaded with a variety of cargo including 60 tons of gunpowder bound for Africa. Days later during the salvage operation the gunpowder was ignited and the subsequent explosion could be heard over 20 miles away. Pointing the way Twenty-nine of the strong salvage crew were killed. A memorial erected in the s now stands on land overlooking the scene of the disaster.
Over hundreds of years of its habitation it has enjoyed a variety of owners and tenants dating back centuries. Agriculture in earnest began in the 18th Century and to this day you can still see the ribbed traces of the old style “lazy bed” cultivation. Sheep have been grazed there for hundreds of years and the rare Manx Loaghtan breed is still present. This attractive brown-fleeced breed is recognisable by its horns on both ewe and ram and the Calf may have been their last bastion had foot and mouth spread to the Isle of Man during the outbreak a few years ago.

Old maps of the Isle of Man Posted 16th November A couple of weeks ago I started looking around on eBay for old maps of the Isle of Man, partly because they may be of some use to the OpenStreetMap project, and partly because it would be really interesting to see what had changed in the past fifty or hundred years around the Island. The thing that triggered me to go out and find them was the launch of Richard Fairhurst’s online browser of the s and 40s Ordnance Survey New Public Edition map of England and Wales.
He’d spent quite some time collecting the maps from secondhand shops knowing that 50 years after their publication the copyright on them expired and hence they get released into the Public Domain where anybody can do with the data what they wish.

Doolish is the capital and largest town of the Isle of Man , with a population of 27, people It is located at the mouth of the River Douglas, and on a sweeping bay of two miles. The River Douglas forms part of the town’s harbour and main commercial port. Douglas was a small settlement until rapid growth occurred as a result of links with the English port of Liverpool in the 18th century. Further population growth came in the following century, resulting during the s in a staged transfer of the High Courts, the Lieutenant Governor’s residence, and finally the seat of the legislature, Tynwald , to Douglas from the ancient capital, Castletown.
The town serves as the Island’s main hub for business, finance, legal services, shipping, transport, shopping, and entertainment. History Early history In the absence of any archaeological data, the origins of the town may be revealed by analysis of the original street and plot pattern. The discovery of a bronze weapon in central Douglas, and the large Ballaquayle Viking treasure hoard on the outskirts, both in the s, hint at the early importance of the site now occupied by Douglas.
Scholars agree that the name of the town derives from Early Celtic ‘Duboglassio’ meaning ‘black river’. The first detailed documentation shows that in there were only thirteen resident households in the settlement clustered north of the harbour, most of the property there classifying as “chambers” unoccupied, unheated, single-celled structures for which rent was paid by non-residents including clergy, officials and landowners from elsewhere on the Island.
This suggests that the origins of the town’s nucleus were as a non-urban port. Growth and development In Thomas Denton described Douglas as “the place of greatest resort” on the Isle of Man, and by a clear picture of the early town emerges, with hints that its residential, market, and military defence functions were growing in importance alongside the port facility.

Gaelic cultural influence began in the 5th century and the Manx language, in , Edwin of Northumbria conquered the Isle of Man along with most of Mercia. In , the became part of Scotland under the Treaty of Perth.
After a period of alternating rule by the kings of Scotland and England, the short form often used in English, Mann, is derived from the Manx Mannin, though sometimes the name is written as Man. Old Welsh records named it as Manaw, also reflected in Manaw Gododdin, the name for an ancient district in north Britain along the lower Firth of Forth. The island was cut off from the islands around BC. The first residents were hunter gatherers and fishermen, examples of their tools are kept at the Manx Museum.

This is well reflected in the relatively large number of monumental inscriptions that have survived on the island, which include both runestones and Ogham stones, exhibiting a mixture of Irish, British, Pictish and Norse influences. Location of Ogham Inscriptions in the Isle of Man Red tags mark the sites of certain Ogham inscriptions a dot indicates that the stone is in situ Blue tags mark museums or other sites where Ogham stones are held The Manx Ogham inscriptions are a heterogeneous group with a wide age span, some perhaps dating to as early as the 5th century, and others dating to as late as the 12th century.
Typifying the fusion of Irish and Norse cultures on the island during the medieval period 9th through 13th centuries are two unique monuments that combine Norse Runic inscriptions and Ogham inscriptions on the same stone: Below that is carved the first ten letters of the Ogham alphabet. If you take away the Norse runes the Ogham inscription is awkwardly placed near the edge of the stone, whereas the Norse inscription occupies the centre of the stone, so I do not think that the Ogham letters predate that Norse inscription, but must have been carved at the same time as the Norse runes maybe Priest John was showing off his skill in both runes and Ogham or more probably at a later date.
Priest John also carved the runes for another inscription that can be dated precisely to , and so the Ogham inscription here must be mid 12th century or later. Maughold Stone Inscription Kermode — fig. There are faint Ogham inscriptions on both the front and back of the slab, the one on the front comprises the entire Ogham alphabet written in bind letters, but the one on the back is no longer legible and the 19th century reading cannot be relied on.
These two inscriptions are clearly not part of the original monument but must have been scratched on at a later date, probably sometime during the 11th or 12th century. The fact that both these Norse monuments have been defaced by the addition of the Ogham alphabet is perhaps indicative of Gaelic reaction against the Norse occupiers of the island, and a resurgence of Gaelic nationalism.
In contrast to these unusual, very late Ogham inscriptions, there are a number of fairly typical Irish-style pillar stones with a monoscript inscription in typical Primitive Irish, commemorating people with Goidelic names: Two of these three stones were found in the burial ground of a Keeill , a type of small, early medieval 5th—12th century Celtic chapel.

Questions are also tabled to Government members and ministers, and answered in either oral or written form.
